Week 4,&5: A Day in the Life
During weeks 4 and 5, students will begin working with narrative writings. Their writing will include a detailed experience they had in second grade and a lesson that they really enjoyed in second grade. They will continue writing about what they expect to learn and something they have heard they will do in third grade. They will also discuss what school is like for them; their responsibilities at home; any extracurricular activities they participate in; and their personal goals for the year. The students will work on hand writing their rough drafts during writing time and type their final copy to be emailed to their ePal during computer lab time. Once they receive their response from their ePal, they will continue to add to their double bubble map and draft for their essay describing the similarities and differences between them both. They will add this information to their blog. |
Week 6,7,&8: Environment
During weeks 6, 7, and 8, students will begin doing research to write an informative writing piece to their ePal about their environment. Students will be responsible for researching what’s in their immediate environment and community. They will research landmarks and the history of their community. They will also look at the weather and how that influences what we buy and wear. They will describe what they do during particular seasons and how the weather influences this behavior. The students will work on their research during one of the computer lab sessions, and their rough drafts during classroom writing times. They will submit their final copy via email to their ePal during a separate computer lab time. Once they receive their response from their ePal, they will continue to add to their double bubble map and draft for their essay describing the similarities and differences between them. They will also research more about their ePals environment so that they can ask them if some of the things they find are true to them or not. They will add these findings to their comparison essay and blog. |
Week 9,10,&11: Culture
During weeks 9, 10, and 11 students will conduct research to write an expository writing piece to their ePals about their culture. Students will be responsible for researching what holidays and traditions they celebrate and why. They will find images of what these celebrations look like. They will discuss some of the cultures within our classroom and how they show compassion to their friends with different beliefs. They will use this as an opportunity to describe some of the hobbies we take interest in based on where we live and what we have access to. Students will work on their research during one of the computer lab times we have scheduled, their rough drafts during classroom writing times, and their final copy during one of the other computer lab times. Once they receive their response from their ePal, they will continue to add to their double bubble map and draft for their essay describing the similarities and differences between their cultures. They will also research more about their ePals culture so that they can ask them if some of the things they found during research are true about their ePals culture or not. They will add these details to their comparison easy and blog. |
Week 12&13: Culminating Activity
Students will create final digital presentations about themselves and their ePals reflecting an increased understanding of the similarities and differences between their cultures, their environments and their lives. Students will have the option of creating a Powerpoint presentation; a Prezi; or a Video Podcast of their findings. Students must include the following information in their presentations:
